Off-Grid Email with any Radio
You do not need a special radio to move email over the air. This episode shows how RadioMail works with packet radio so almost any station can send and receive messages off the grid.
Transcript
If all you have is a radio with a mic
and speaker
jack, a Digirig Lite and RadioMail
will turn your iPhone into a packet
station.
[whimsical music]
The Digirig Lite audio interface is
plug-and-play.
You just plug it on one side on into the
radio
and the other side,
the USB-C connector plugs directly
into your iPhone or iPad.
RadioMail will detect it automatically.
Once it's plugged in,
you'll see it under the Device section.
Just tap the entry, and you'll get, uh,
more
settings that you can control,
and particularly you will get
the audio monitor,
so you can make sure you have the proper
volume.
It's very important to adjust that volume.
It's very important to make sure the
squelch is fully open on the radio.
And you can also check the audio out.
You start the test, and the Digirig
PTT light comes on, and
that means you're good to
transmit.
Now, to start a connection,
tap the antenna icon.
It will open the connection window.
Here you can select the station you're
trying to connect by tapping the
call sign. It will open the selection
dialog. Here I'm in my Favorites.
I will select
VHF Packet, the W6AZT
test station.
In here you notice it says Packet Modem
Digirig
Lite in manual mode.
That means you have to make sure the
radio frequency is set to the station
you're trying to reach.
It doesn't do CAT control for you in this
setup.
Now you can just hit Connect,
and the radio will try to do a connection
with
the remote station.
And you can see PTT going on
in the Digirig itself. The radio
is keying. Everything looks good.
We're getting information back from the
RMS
gateway.
And let's see if we have some mail pending
for us.
[radio beeping]
Looks like we had a incoming message.
It's being retrieved.
[radio beeping]
And now we're closing the connection,
and we're done. We got the email.
There you have it.
If your radio has a mic and speaker jack,
it can do Winlink. All you need
is a Digirig Lite
and RadioMail.
Mahalo and seventy-three.
